At least 10 dead in Kitengela accident

At least 10 people are feared dead after a double road accident on the Namanga-Nairobi road in Kitengela Town, just south of Nairobi on Sunday evening.

The accidents occurred at about 8pm.

The first accident occurred when the Nissan matatu and a saloon car collided. That created a huge traffic jam as people rushed to the scene to rescue the injured.

“As they struggled to rescue the others, there was a loud crash from behind because a lorry carrying sand had hit another lorry that was stuck in the traffic jam. It appears the brakes on the second lorry failed. The driver swerved, and as he went out of the road, the lorry fell on a pick-up truck, which had eight people on board. Seven died on the spot, and one was seriously injured,” a traffic police officer told the Nation at the scene.

There were also two more saloon cars that were hit as a result of the collision of the lorries.

At least three people died in the first accident.

Mr James Kamau, the driver of the second lorry that was ferrying sand, said he was not aware that there was an accident ahead. He suffered cuts and bruises to the head.

The accidents occurred at Riverside, 50 metres from Yukos petrol station. The injured were rushed to Shalom and Corner hospitals in the town.
